In these difficult financial times when many people are suffering due to the bad economy of recent years, it may be easy to fall victim to the lure of credit cards. Although credit cards are not offered as freely in the mail as they used to be, stores are still making credit card offers to their customers when a purchase is made. There are some good reasons to use credit cards. They provide a record of purchases. It is obviously advisable to have a credit line of some sort available in case of emergencies. Credit cards should be used wisely without incurring insurmountable debt.

Many banks or other companies today offer points or cash back for purchases. These incentives can be great rewards for using credit. People are able to pay for vacations or acquire useful items through the rewards programs of credit card companies. It is often tempting to accept a credit card at a retail store when the sales person asks the customer if they would like to save 10% or 20% on the purchase they just made by signing up for a store credit card. The customer should realize that the sales person will get credit for obtaining a credit customer, and it may not be advantageous to acquire the card which could take down the credit score a little just for signing up.

Secured vs. Unsecured Cards:- No matter what type of credit card you have, both credit cards-secured and unsecured ones-can be used to pay for various goods and services. The main difference between the two credit cards is that a secured card requires that you open and maintain a savings account that will secure your credit line if in any case, you will not be able to make a payment. Most individuals who have a low credit score apply for this type of card.

The deposit required for a secured credit card varies. It could range from a few hundred dollars to a thousand dollars depending on the desired credit limit. Often, a certain percentage of your deposit will comprise your credit limit. For instance, if you deposited two thousand dollars, then your credit limit can only amount up to one thousand five hundred or a thousand, while there are other credit institutions that allow its consumers to maximize their deposit. If you want to apply for a secured credit card, you need to first check on the various charges that they impose since annual fees and processing fees are not included in the deposit. You also have to check whether the payments that you made will be refunded if in any case you are denied.

Misleading Ads and Frauds:- Credit card applications can be a major ground for identity thieves to commit fraudulent activities. Often, they advertise through the internet, newspapers, television and post cards. The number that they provide is not toll free which means that by simply making the call, you will be billed. They will instruct you to provide your name and address so they can send the credit card application to you.

It should not be stressed enough how important it is not to simply give out your personal information to people that you cannot verify the identity. At times, these agencies or firms also ask for your social security number which is a very valuable resource for identity theft criminals. They can use this information against you and you may be left with nothing but a worse credit than you had before you even applied. Identity theft is a real issue and while a lot of people take advantage of other people's ignorance, you should not allow yourself to become a victim of identity theft.
